Love comes in disguises

Comparing "Taming of the shrew" to "There's something about Mary"

Romance seems to be shrouded in lies. In Shrew we see Lucentio and Hortensio disguise themsleves so they can become closer to Bianca. They use their concocted personas to insert themselves into her life unknowingly. In "There's something about Mary" Pat and Norm each create complete "characters" so that they can have a chance at being with her since they know Mary would never be attracted to them normally.

Though both stories contain characters who hide their true selves they do differ on their long time intentions. In Shrew , Lucentio and Hortensio were only going to use their disguises for a short time, they would reveal themselves when they had wooed Bianca. In "There's something about Mary" Pat and Norm had no intentions of ever letting their convoluted disguises come off.

Both of these stories are using deception as a means of growing closer to someone it shows the means one person can go when completely in "love"

LUCENTIO

Basta, content thee, for I have it full.

We have not yet been seen in any house,

Nor can we be distinguished by our faces

For man or master. Then it follows thus:

Thou shalt be master, Tranio, in my stead,

Keep house and port and servants as I should.

I will some other be, some Florentine,

Some Neapolitan, or meaner man of Pisa.

'Tis hatched, and shall be so. Tranio, at once

Uncase thee. Take my colored hat and cloak.

(Line 140, Chapter 1, scene1 )

In this quote, Lucentio describes how he will impersonate someone else so that he may be allowed to see Bianca. He believe love warrants this odd behavior and that there is nothing wrong with it.

Pat after tailing Mary for weeks and "falling in love with her" uses all the info he has gathered to create a perfect match for Mary. She quickly falls for his fake alter ego based upon what he learned she was looking for in a man. Unlike Lucentio He does not plan on dropping this facade. This shows the lengths that Pat will go to get Mary and the effect she has on his state of mind.

Hic ibat, as I told you before, Simois, I am Lucentio, hic est, son of Vincentio of Pisa, Sigeia tellus, disguised as a teacher so as to win your love, Hic steterat, and the fellow who comes to court you calling himself “Lucentio,” Priami, is my servant Tranio, regia, pretending to be me, celsa senis, so we can get the better of the foolish old man.(Act 3 scene 1, page 2)

With Lucentio admitting to disguising him self we can see a stark contrast between these two stories. At this point Bianca is now aware that Lucentio actually likes her, in admitting who he is we can see a more real vision of love but he still has lied to get to this point.

At this point in the movie everyone has admitted to lying to Mary to become closer to her. They ask her to choose who she really loves when Ted the main character comes in. Ted who is also in love with Mary decides that he has been deciving her too and he sets out to find her last boyfriend becuase she said that he was the one. As ted arrives with the boyfriend he explained that tucked had lied to get them to break up so that he would have a better chance with her. The boyfriend Brett says he will always be true to her and ted says
"You see I learned something today . Im no better then any of these guys. Non of them love you really . Their just fixated on you because of how you make them feel about themselves. Thats not love. Thats something else" Ted leaves knowing he has done the right thing giving her back the only man in her life who was not lying to her completely. As he leaves the building he begins to cry knowing that his true love is with another man. As he makes his way to the car Mary calls his name and he tells her he just wants to be happy. Mary taking this as a sign of his total devotion to him tells him she loves him too and they kiss as the movie ends. So like "Shrew" after the truth came out things began to look up
